Finding your first mortgage

Buying your first home is an exciting time, but finding the right mortgage may feel a little daunting. If you've saved up a deposit, it's time to explore your options.

How much could I borrow?

Before you start looking for your first home, you'll need to find out how much you could borrow. This will give you an idea of the properties you may be able to afford. You can then start looking for your first home.

I've found a home... What next?

If you've found a home, it's time to find a mortgage. Mortgage Advice Bureau have a wealth of knowledge, helping first-time buyers with their mortgage journey.

First-time buyer mortgages are specifically designed for those who are taking out a mortgage to purchase their first home.

To be classed as a first-time buyer, you (and any joint borrowers) must have never owned a property. For example, if you’ve never purchased a home but you’re buying with a partner who previously owned property, then you would not be classed as first-time buyers.

If you're ready to take out your first mortgage, it’s important to ensure you’re in good financial shape. You should consider current loans and debts, on-time repayments, stable employment, savings and credit rating.

Additionally, you should ensure you’re on the electoral register, as this can help improve your credit score and serves as credible evidence of your name and address.

A mortgage advisor will be able to provide advice and guidance on this.

Mortgage advisors will try and answer any questions you have about your first-time buyer mortgage. Some questions that could be useful are 'how much deposit will I need?', 'what will my monthly repayments be?', ‘what documents do I need to provide?’ and ‘what interest rate can I expect?’

Mortgages can sound confusing so we've pulled together a guide to mortgage jargon to help you navigate the most common terms and phrases used. Visit our 'Mortgage jargon' page to find out more.

Mortgage Advice Bureau have access to thousands of products from over 90 different lenders. This means they're able to support a wide range of borrowers with different needs and requirements. You can view some of the different types of mortgages they can help with on our 'New mortgage customer' page, or call Mortgage Advice Bureau on 0808 501 2740 to talk to an adviser.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage
